Castagneto Carducci

The town’s original name was Castagneto Marittimo but in 1907 it was changed in honour the illustrious poet who spent here a period of his early youth. Inside the Town Hall you can find the Giosuè Carducci Archival Museum, that preserves his memorabilia and is home to the literary park of the poet. In the central and upper part of the town you can find the Castle of the Della Gherardesca family and the church of S. Lorenzo.

Viale dei Cipressi

From the oratory of San Guido along the Aurelia state road you can find on the left the well-known Viale dei Cipressi that leads to Bolgheri and that is celebrated by Giosuè Carducci in the ode Davanti San Guido.

Padule di Bolgheri

The WWF Padule di Bolgheri wildfire refugee is known for its varied territory with wet and uncultivated meadows and flooded woods. The reserve was established on the initiative of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in 1959 and was the first private oasis in Italy.

Castagneto e Bolgheri

The medieval village of Castagneto Carducci is perched on a gentle hill and dominates the whole valley from the countryside to the sea. Going up the narrow streets of the town you arrive in front of the poet’s statue breathless, both for the emotion caused by its sight and because in any way you want to reach the marble half-bust, you have to go through a steep path. Once there, you have reached the center of the village where the Noble Prize Giosuè Carducci spent part of his life and whose people chose to celebrate.
The paved narrow streets lead to the highest point, where the castle dominates the town. . As in every fairy tale, Castagneto Carducci also has its enchanting castle that belongs to the noble and prestigious family of Della Gherardesca, around which the village develops through a series of concentric rings that create an extraordinary labyrinth covered with streets, alleys and small typical squares.

In addition to the Castle and the churchdella Propositura di San Lorenzo inside it, the historical and fascinating town center preserves many other sites such as the churchdel Santissimo Crocifisso, where an important object of worship is kept, the wooden crucifix of the 15th century or the Palazzo Pretorio, now the Town Hall, the museum Casa Carducci and the Teatro Roma. Walking down the main street you can find typical restaurants and osterias, until you reach Piazzale Belvedere, from where you can see the surrounding countryside. On your left there are the remains of the Torre di Donoratico, located on a small wooded hill along which there are still remains of necropolis and Etruscan tombs craved into the rock. Touring right, following the Via Bolgherese, among many vineyards and olive groves you can find the wonderful town of Bolgheri. . In the distance you can admire the dream-like sunsets that enlighten the coastline of Marina di Castagneto Carducci. . Marina was built around a 18th century fort wanted by the Lorena family. In the village you can find accommodation facilities, many bathing establishments and one of the biggest amusement parks of Tuscany, Cavallino Matto. The amazing and majestic pinewood bordered by kilometres of pristine beaches is considered the green lung of the coast.
This territory is a destination like no other for outdoor tourism and it has been elected cycling capital thanks to the absence of traffic, the great variety of routes and its pleasant weather. Castagneto is the perfect destination for a holiday between sea and countryside, to spend a relaxing evening in good company, coming back from a day spent at one of its beautiful beaches, drinking the fine wines of the DOC Bolgheri and for a dinner with the typical products of the local cuisine.
