La Strada del Vino e dell’Olio Costa degli Etruschi covers a route that exceeds 150 km in length along the Tyrrhenian coast and the Island of Elba in the province of Livorno, reaching a part of the province of Pisa. In this part of Tuscany the Italian wine revolution began thanks to the precursor of the Supertuscans, the Sassicaia, and continued with the initiatives of the many winemakers of this territory scattered in the five DOC areas, enriched by a fine production of extra virgin olive oils and by the high-quality delicacies used in the rich local cuisine.

The Route

Arriving from the north, the first area you meet is the one of the DOC Montescudaio, in the province of Pisa, a hilly and cool area where the wines are elegant and fragrant, almost austere at times. Continuing you enter the province of Livorno with the town of Bibbona, where small producers and big wineries started to produce wines of great quality. After a few kilometres you enter the DOC Bolgheri, home of the Sassicaia and other fine wines that have played a key role in the recent history of Italian wine. From Bolgheri, headquarters of the Consortium with a tourist office open to the public, you cross the two rows of cypresses, celebrated by Carducci in his verses and declared national monument and you reach San Guido, where the Sassicaia winery is located. Going south you enter the DOC Val di Cornia, where the wines have a solid character and where particular soil mineralisations give the great reds austere and deep aspects. . Crossing the sea from Piombino you reach Elba Island, where the Aleatico vineyard is the most cultivated (famous for its straw wine), but where the commitment of a few producers is developing a fine family of reds and sapid and structured whites.
